On 16-17 November 2019, the 5th East Lake Forum on Global Governance: Belt & Road and Global Governance, hosted by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), was held at Wuhan East Lake Hotel. Around 150 people from more than 10 countries and regions including China, Germany, Malaysia, Morocco, India, Mongolia, Portugal, Mali, Kenya, Nepal and Greece attended this forum. Pro-Rector Prof. Ip Kuai Peng, and Assistant Dean of Institute for Research on Portuguese-speaking Counties Prof. Francisco B.S. José Leandro led three doctoral and master candidates from our institute to participate in this forum

In the forum, Prof. Ip Kuai Peng made a keynote speech on “Macau SAR participates in and assists the Belt and Road”. He expressed that as a center of Chinese and Western culture, an important node of the Maritime Silk Road, one of the four central cities in the Greater Bay Area, Macau has its own unique advantages and status. In the context of the Belt and Road, Macau will be more actively integrated into the overall situation of national development and play an important role of unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bond. In addition to this, Prof. Ip Kuai Peng also mentioned the “Belt and Road” scholarship established by the Macau Foundation, which can better promote the friendly exchanges among young students along the line and let more people know more about Macau and City University of Macau.

Prof. Francisco Leandro made a keynote speech on the theme of “The Mesmerizing Journey from Gyeongju to Lisbon: The B&RI as a Mechanism of De-bordering, Re-bordering, and Co-bordering.” He said that the B&RI as a de-bordering mechanism makes a positive contribution to border security. The B&RI elements of connectivity are central to de-bordering. Borders are alive. Borders are the result of asymmetry perceptions. At last, three doctoral and master candidates in our institute also had a wonderful discussion in the forum, which was a good exchange opportunity and experience.
