14th Academic Salon on ‘Portuguese-speaking Countries Research’: The Geopolitics of Timor Leste


On the 24th of September 2019, Dr. Danilo Henriques, Representative of Timor Leste to the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries had been invited as guest speaker to the IROPC 14th Academic Salon. Dr. Henriques delivered a presentation on ‘Geopolitics of Timor Leste’. This event was held in on Venue GD518, in English language.

 

Dr. Danilo Henriques organized his presentation in four modules of distribution physical space into political power, actors power to enforce maintain distribution, shift distribution power different factors and re-distribution space newly powerful actors.

 

 

Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste, is a country located in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian. Timor Leste displays among the highest birth rate in the world. Besides, our guest demonstrated the beautiful pictures of the view of Atauro but explained the danger for the depth of the sea and the flows of Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

 

In addition, Dr. Henriques generously shared the cultures of Timor Leste in the terms of linguistics, myths, rituals, social construction and even the social levels. When it comes to the economy, we are introduced that the Government of Timor Leste has focused its economic development on infrastructure reconstruction, improvement of agriculture and development of oil and gas resources, and has increased its investment in these areas to promote sustainable economic development.

 

As a country surrounded by Australia and Indonesia, Timor Leste's strategic position is very important. To enter the Pacific Ocean from the Indian Ocean, vessels must pass through the waters of East Timor, which is also in line with geopolitics. Talking about Timor-Leste's future, our guest asserted that Timor Leste had been committed to joining ASEAN, but had not been able to do so because of Singapore's veto. Timor Leste is also an important member of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries and a member of the G7 + Summit. Timor-Leste has always attached great importance to the protection of marine diversity and has joined the Coral Reef Triangle. With regard to global cooperation, the offshore oil and gas development in Timor Leste has greatly supplemented the Government's with significant incoming. At the same time, infrastructure in Timor Leste has gradually improved, and airports have been built in Suai, and Oecusse. Finally, Dr. Danilo concluded with his own global family history.
