On 26 April 2019, the Institute on Research on Portuguese-speaking Countries and Faculty of Business organized the 3rd Academic Salon on ‘Research on PSC’. The guest speaker was the Associated Professor Alexandre Lobo from University of Saint Joseph. Professor Alexandre addressed the topic ‘China - Brazil Relations and the role of Macau, SAR’.

Professor Alexandre has a long experience of research and business in China and in Brazil and organized his lecture in three parts: (1) Brazil economic characterization as the 5th economy in the world; (2) Economic Relations China-Brazil since 2014 with special reference to the Governments of Presidents Dilma Vana Rousseff and Lula da Silva (2014-2017); and (3) the Role of MSAR.

According to Professor Alexandre the business sector between Brazil and China is covered by a small group of large corporations and limited to number of products such as meat, soya beens, iron and oil. Therefore, there is an immense potencial of cooperation in all the economic sectors, namely tourism, agriculture, technology, education, electronics, and blue economy.

Elaborating on the remaining potential for cooperation between Brazil and China and having in mind the role of MSAR, Professor Alexandre sees the Forum Macau as the right entity to leverage the cooperation extending the commercial initiative to other sectors, ouside sovereign bilateral relations. Furthermore, Professor Alexandre suggested that the development of the principle “one contry to systems”, is vital to leverage cultural and commercial relations, to complement bilateral sovereign dynamics.
